    Murray State University is an NCAA Division I school (football is NCAA Division I-AA), with baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, tennis, and track and field for men and basketball, cross-country, golf, rolling, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball for women. There is a co-educational rifle team. There is also a varsity cheerleading team and a dance team. Murray State University is in the Ohio Valley Conference.

    The team nickname is the Racers, although the baseball team is known as the Thoroughbreds. All teams were originally known as the Thoroughbreds, but newspaper headline writers began shortening it to Racers, which became accepted as the team name by everyone but the baseball coach at the time (late 1950’s). The team mascot is a living horse.

    Sports facilities include an arena, a golf course, a track, the baseball stadium, and football stadium. The rowing team rows in Kentucky Lake, located in Cherokee Park and approximately 70 miles long.

    The Murray State Racers compete in the NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference. Football competes in Division I-AA. The school colors are navy blue and gold. Men’s intercollegiate sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and track and field. Women’s intercollegiate sports include basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. There is also a men’s and women’s rifle team. Cheerleading is considered a varsity sport. Athletic facilities include Cherokee Park, Roy Stewart Stadium, Cutchin Field, Miller Memorial Golf Course, Purcell Tennis Courts, and the Racer Arena.
